Sovereignty, Free Will…What is the Problem?

I have visited blogs throughout my journey here and have noticed two distinct ways of thinking. These two ideologies are usually coupled with certain behaviours.

One party believes that God is completely sovereign, the other believes that God is sovereign over all EXCEPT man’s so called free will. I haven’t found really any other thinking. Now both parties carry with them marked behaviours, thinking and attitudes. It’s really quite amazing how this trend carries out with most if not all people. The only people that these behaviours don’t follow are those who really don’t know one way or the other, then you must question whether or not they are in fact saved.

The sovereignty camp believes that God is in complete control over all men, details and the entire universe. Period. For by definition, sovereignty must mean this. It cannot mean over most things, or over 99.99% of things. Sovereign means over all. The ‘free will’ camp, we will call them, believe that God cannot encroach upon man’s will and interfere. God cannot step over the lines of pushing His will on a man. Free will by definition, means, ‘Man can make his own decisions and no one, including God can influence those decisions’. Does this sound scriptural? Does this run in line with sovereignty? Is God God? Or isn’t He? Is He omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent? Or is He limited? This is serious and if one calls himself saved, declared righteous and a follower of Jesus Christ, then that means that he has accepted the Lordship of Christ, right? Jesus is Lord, right? Then if this is indeed true, then Jesus is Lord. I know this is simple, but it seems some people need simple and plain.

If Jesus is Lord, then He is Lord. If He is Lord then He is in control. If He is in control, then you are not. Makes sense? If He is Lord, then He makes the decisions, and if He does, then you don’t.

Can we agree with this? If you don’t agree with these simple statements then you are in trouble, friend. You need to make the decision either one way or the other to either accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ or accept the lordship of man. If you agree with the sovereignty and lordship of Jesus Christ, then the Holy Spirit has opened your eyes to Truth. If you disagree, then the evidence points to you being in rebellion and living a human-based, works-based religion with the label Christian on it somewhere.

Sovereignty of Jesus Christ or the sovereignty of man. Either you will stand before Jesus Christ and give testimony for your life, and receive punishment or reward, or you will sit on the throne and God will have to answer for not giving you the things you desired all your life. Which will it be?

  3. “You need to make the decision either one way or the other to either accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ or accept the lordship of man.” I’m not trying to be smart, I’m asking this from a sincere heart that has a blurred look at both sides, but would I be making that decision or is the sovereignty of God making that decision on my behalf? And, if you’re asking me to make that decision are you trying to persuade me to use my own free will?

    • The Holy Spirit gives you the power and capacity to make that decision. You on your own cannot make that decision for you in your unsaved condition do not have the capacity of declaring Christ as Lord. So yes, it would be the sovereignty of God. It would be like reading a novel and reading about two people discussing the sovereignty of the writer who wrote this novel. One believes the writer has written the script and all they are doing is following the pages, and the other believes he is in control and he makes his own decisions and those decisions are free from any outside influence.
